Huw Williams was appointed Musical Director of Monmouth Choral Society in January 2010 as successor to Benjamin Nicholas. In addition to being sub-organist at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, London, he is also Musical Director of Stroud Choral Society and teaches at Cambridge University and Eton College. He has performed as an organ soloist in Canada, USA, England and in the UK as well as making solo recordings during his time at St Paul’s Cathedral. As an accompanist Huw has made recordings with St Paul’s and Hereford Cathedrals and with the Sixteen and with major orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Wales and London Mozart Players. He has also worked with many types of choirs both amateur and professional. He has adjudicated choral competitions, given master classes for the Royal School of Church Music as well as composing and arranging pieces for performance, many at St Paul’s Cathedral. He has been made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Born in Swansea he is a fluent Welsh speaker. He was Organ Scholar at Christ’s College, Cambridge and then studied at the Royal Academy of Music and in Holland. As sub-organist at St Paul’s Cathedral for 10 years he played for many state and national services including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Service. After leaving St Paul’s he worked as Musical Director at the Church of the Redeemer, Bryn Mawr, near Philadelphia, USA, where he directed a group of 80 singers in 7 choirs. This wealth of musical experience combined with a sense of humour, energy and a fund of knowledge ensures lively rehearsals at Monmouth Choral Society.
